Personhood IOWA Asks the Candidates

We at Personhood IOWA recently asked several of the candidates running for president two simple questions about what they have done to protect ALL innocent human life and what they will do as president to stop the killing of preborn children in America, once and for all.

Here are the answers unedited (except for format) from the candidates that have responded…We will update if we get more responses as they come in:

1) Please describe how you have defended the inalienable right to life for every person.

I have long been a leader in the pro-life movement, even before it was popular! It’s true that we have made great gains in the pro-life movement, though we still have a long way to go to restore a culture of life. I am proud to have been integral to the federal legislative gains we have made.

I hold an unblemished 100% pro-life voting record. I authored the 1995 Partial-Birth Abortion Ban and sponsored the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, giving the right to life to any child born within the United States. I was a champion of Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Additionally, I led the fight opposing federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Karen and I have put our pro-life principles into practice by caring our youngest daughter, Bella, who was born with a serious genetic disorder — Trisomy 18. Bella won’t walk and talk like our other children, but her ability to love others is her greatest gift. As I like to say, Bella has made me better! And she has only been reaffirmed and strengthened our commitment to protecting every human life, without regard to age or ability.

If we are to err, it must be on the side of life.

2) What must the next President do to stop the killing of preborn children in America, once and for all?

As President, I will appoint originalist Supreme Court justices and federal judges — jurists who will respect the Constitution and not invent rights in the “penumbra” of the 14th Amendment. The “right to life” is explicitly mentioned in our Declaration of Independence, and it’s written on the human heart. It is a biological fact that human life begins at conception. Our law must recognize this biological fact and grant constitutional protections to every human life. I would support a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution. Additionally, I would defund organizations like Planned Parenthood, who effectively provide government-subsidized abortions to their patients under Title X block grants and Medicaid.

~Sen. Rick Santorum

1) Please describe how you have defended the inalienable right to life for every person.

I am proud to have a 100% rating from National Right to Life and a 0% rating from Planned Parenthood, which I voted to defund in one of my first votes in the U.S. Senate. I am the main sponsor of the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA), which would give states the authority they need to properly enforce laws requiring parental notification before a minor can have an abortion. I have also led the fight to prohibit abortions after 20 weeks, which is when science irrefutably demonstrates that unborn children can feel pain. I have worked to stop taxpayer-funded abortions, sex-selective abortions, and while I work to repeal ObamaCare, to require all ObamaCare health care plans to disclose whether they cover elective abortions.

) What must the next President do to stop the killing of preborn children in America, once and for all?

Protecting life defines who we want to be as a society, and all life is worthy of protection. As president, I will urge Congress to pass, and will quickly sign, the pro-life bills I support in the U.S. Senate. I will work to immediately defund Planned Parenthood. I will reinstate the Mexico City Policy to prevent taxpayer funding of overseas abortions. Finally, to guarantee the protection of life far beyond my term, I will appoint conservative Supreme Court justices who will uphold and defend every human beings’ sacred and inalienable right to life.

~Sen. Marco Rubio

1. Please describe how you have defended the inalienable right to life for every person.

Life is a precious gift from God, and I have fought to protect the right to life of every
person, born and unborn. As Solicitor General of Texas, I was proud to author a brief on
behalf of 13 states successfully defending a federal law that bans partial birth abortion
and to lead 18 states in upholding New Hampshire’s parental notifications laws, both
cases that we successfully won at the Supreme Court. In 2005, I also successfully
defended Texas’s Rider 8, which prohibits taxpayer funds for groups that provide
abortions, winning unanimously before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. While these
measures do not remove the scourge of abortion entirely, they continue to shine the light
on the atrocity and move us closer to doing so.
During my time in the Senate, I have continued to fight for life. I am an
original cosponsor of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, to ban abortions
after 20 weeks. I introduced a measure to stop the D.C. Council from forcing
organizations to fund abortion services. After the horror of the Gosnell case, I sponsored
a resolution to investigate and conduct hearings on the inhumane abortion practices, and
when Texas State Senator Wendy Davis and an army of abortion advocates tried to
squelch legislation designed to protect the unborn, I proudly stood with the vast majority
of Texans to affirm the dignity of life.
I have called for completely defunding and investigating Planned Parenthood, and
especially in the wake of the video release, I am pressing congressional leadership to not
pass any funding bill that streams money into this corrupt life-ending organization.

. What must the next President do to stop the killing of preborn children in America, onceand for all?

We need a president who will stand unapologetically for life. I have tirelessly defended
the unborn, and if I am elected president, I will ensure that every branch of the federal
government protects the sanctity of life.
We have witnessed videos showing Planned Parenthood’s grotesque and utterly barbaric
selling of babies’ body parts. The organization’s practices are horrific, we must stop such
a violent assault on innocent life, and on day one in office, I will direct the Department of
Justice to open a criminal investigation against Planned Parenthood.
As the nation witnessed in one of the gravest events in our modern history, unelected
judges declared abortion to be an individual’s right in Roe v. Wade. That was wrong, it’s
inconsistent with the very first right in the Declaration of Independence and with the
Constitution, and the president has the particular power to nominate judges who
recognize all persons’ fundamental right to life. I will nominate judges committed to
reversing Roe.
I will sign any life-affirming bill that comes to my desk and will urge Congress to pass
measures to protect the unborn, including a ban on abortions after 20 weeks, a ban on any
federal funding of abortion providers, and repeal of Obamacare, which subsidizes the
abortion industry and violates the right to conscience of religious employers by
compelling them to provide insurance coverage for abortifacients. And to put an end
to Roe once and for all, I will also advocate for a constitutional amendment that protects
life.
I will stop the Obama Administration’s assault on life-affirming organizations by
ensuring that adequate conscience protections are in place throughout the
government, and I will direct every agency to implement policies that protect and further
the cause of life. By the time I leave the White House, it would be my goal to entirely
eliminate this tragic practice from our nation and uphold the sanctity of life.

~Sen. Ted Cruz

  1. Please describe how you have defended the inalienable right to life for every person.

Throughout my career as a pediatric neurosurgeon, I encountered numerous patients that other highly-trained and skilled medical professionals believed to be incurable. Many times when I took the cases of extremely ill children, I was told not to by fellow doctors who warned that nothing could be done.

One such case was presented to me in Philadelphia. There a mother was pregnant with twins, and the head of one of her babies was swelling and had become so enlarged that it was distressing the other child.

Medical science at the time told us we should not operate on babies in the womb. But I did not let that stop me. Using ultrasound I operated on the sick baby and was able to drain the swelling. For these efforts, my fellow doctors filed complaints against me.

The result? Both babies were born safe and sound.

This occurred decades ago when no one knew who I was, before I had any interest in running for office. I did then what I had done countless times since in my career: I pushed science to preserve and protect life.  Time and time again when no one was looking, God and I were in the operating room saving lives.

As you know, I am not a politician, and maybe that is a blessing. Yet running for President has exposed me to how politics can distort the truth. For instance, I have been accused of using fetal tissue in a research study. This is simply not true. I have never, ever, been involved in an abortion. I have never, ever done research on fetal tissue. The study in question, which was paraded around by one of my opponents, bears my name along with others. But my involvement in that study was to donate the brain tumors I removed from sick children to pathologists to examine for clues on how to stop those tumors.

The truth is: I have always been pro-life in my personal beliefs and actions. I have led the fight to defund and denounce Planned Parenthood, and I have helped raise millions upon millions of dollars to stop abortions.

As President, I will continue to defend the unborn and promote a culture of life.

2) What must the next President do to stop the killing of preborn children in America, once and for all?

First of all, the next President must stop all federal funding for abortion providers and eliminate the federal mandate that health insurance companies pay for abortions. I will do both as soon as possible.

Next we must continue the great work that is being done to change our culture. The devaluing of human life must end. Leaders must lead. In addition to calling for changes in government policies, they must also change people’s hearts and elevate their morals.

I have spoken out strongly and clearly to the victims of Planned Parenthood–and will continue to do so. Victory is in our sights. We must move forward to eradicate abortion once and for all.

~Dr. Ben Carson
